Why Doesn’t Dieting Work?!
Have you ever tried dieting?
You probably have – just like me.
Most American woman have. And if you’re like most of us, you’ve also watched the weight come back – sometimes more thatn you lost in the first place!
Study after Study shows the same thing: those lost pounds come back – and for many of us they bring friends.
Americans spend around $135 Billion every year trying to lose or maintain their weight. We are clearly working very hard at someting that isn’t working. After a while it starts to feel like a never-ending cycle that just keeps repeating.
So why isn’t it working? There could be lots of differnt reasons – hormones, misinformation, medical issues, etc…
But I want to talk about one reason that I think isn’t addressed often enough: your mindset.
think about what happens when you decide to go on a diet. you look in the mirror, feel uncomfortable, and tell yourself “I have to lose weight!” That statement alone is workning against you in ways you may not realize.
First – being told you have to do something, even if your telling yourself, creates resistance. Nobody likes being ordered around.
Second – the word “Loss”… When you lose your keys, your wallet, someone you love – loss feels painful. Your subconscious mind connects loss with pain. so when you’re trying to “lose” weight, part of your brain is secretly working to find it again.
Third – Deprivation. The moment you tell yourself that you can’t have someting, it becomes all you can think about. Deprivation is one of the most powerful emptions we experience – historically, being deprived meant our very survival was at risk. And over time, these things create a cycle – restriction, craving, giving in, and starting over again.
Here’s what I’ve learned: the problem is not lack of willpower, it never was. The problem was never you. It is the way you have been taught to think about yourself and dieting.
When you change your thoughts, eyou change everything.
